Akshay Joshi - When Passion Becomes Profession

Turning 18 is an important milestone for children raised in India. It means the onset of adulthood, the right to vote, important career choices and the right to roads. However, this is the age at which most young men are bestowed with their first motorcycle. In the case of Akshay Joshi, who had just passed his board exams with flying colours, it was then when he received his first Royal Enfield.

Five years since then, Akshay has more than 1.5 lakh kilometres under his belt. Since finishing high school, Akshay went on to study a bachelor’s degree in hotel management, while riding slowly started to play more of a prominent role as he grew into an adult. He discovered his passion when he was 18, when he joined Enfield Pirates Mumbai, a group of motorcyclists he considers family. His love for riding manifested itself when he took a drastic call to switch careers. Giving up a safe job and an opportunity to move to the United Kingdom, Akshay took the entrepreneur’s road into the unknown.

At all of 23 years old, Akshay founded On Two Wheels, a motorcycle rental and touring company based in Mumbai - complete with a fleet of seven motorcycles. Akshay makes his pilgrimage to the Himalayas every year, while spending the rest of his time acting as the pilot to rides he hosts on his ride ‘Phoenix’. In a short span of five years, he went from being a student to someone who makes a living out his passion. He is currently preparing for next year’s edition of Raid de Himalaya.
